Primary Responsibilities
HDR Engineering is looking for a Civil/Structural Engineer/EIT to join our growing and nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals in our Albany, NY office.

The primary duties include preparation of engineering drawings, calculations, analyses, reports and designs for electrical substations (Low, Medium and High Voltage) and substation systems under the direction and supervision of more senior engineers and designers. In addition the candidate is responsible for knowledge and execution of the technical aspects and deliverables of projects assigned and is a competent engineer who generally understands and can complete all technical requirements of projects of basic to moderate complexity based upon experience.

Some specific responsibilities will include:
  • Substation physical engineering design (equipment layout, lighting, lightning protection, conduit and grounding layout, etc) and structural engineering (concrete foundation and steel design).
  • Duties will include both the Structural (Steel & foundation) and Physical (Outdoor) aspects of High Voltage (HV) substation design
  • Physical substation design including General Arrangements Sections, Grounding & Conduit Plans, Foundation Plans, Material List (BOM)
  • Civil substation design including steel structure analysis and design, spread and mat footing design, and drilled pier design.
  • Communicate with Project Manager(s) and Project Engineer(s).
  • Work under the direction of the Project Manager(s) and Project Engineer(s) and capable of handling basic to moderately complex tasks using their own discretion.
  • Work with experienced personnel and Senior Engineers to identify and develop specific technical expertise and attend training and seminars focused on further development and understanding of complex concepts related to their discipline.
  • Prepare calculations, design sketches and redline drawings.
  • Work with Designers and CAD Technicians to develop drawings in accordance with national design standards, safety codes and project specifications and requirements.
  • May assign tasks, provide guidance, and/or review work performed by junior level engineers, Designers and CAD drafters and coordinates QC reviews from other teams on an as needed basis.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering required.
  • One plus years of civil/structural design experience is preferred but will consider a more junior candidate with strong educational credentials and background, particularly with EIT and some experience, such as previous internships.
  • EIT/FE is strong preferred. Ability to obtain within 6 months is required.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD and structural analysis software, experience with MicroStation or Civil 3D a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must. 
  • Some travel may be required.
